Product Details

Our water-based finishes work on:

absorbent aniline and semi-aniline leather,
non-absorbent full-grain or top-grain leather,
and vinyl upholstery.

Do not use on fabric, suede, nubuck, bonded or faux leather.

Our finishes won’t sun fade or backstain like leather dyes. They don't feel plasticky, flake or peel like spray paints.

Changing color requires poses more maintenance than simply restoring to original. The following are not good candidates and will require touch-up:

changing from red / dark to white / pale;
worn, cracking, scaly or thinning leather;
furniture with lots of wrinkles, folds, deep creases (and therefore stress);
pieces that are heavily used or harshly cleaned (kids, dogs, chemicals);
car or boat upholstery;
bonded, faux or polyurethane (PU) ‘leather’ which repel all finishes (including their own).

Thorough cleaning and stress testing the color are critical! Add 1/2 teaspoon cross-linker per every 2 oz color to improve adhesion and durability. Adding 1 part Satin Sealer to 4 parts color is also recommended to seal bright colors.

How to match a color?

How much do I need?

Colors and clear finishes get the same coverage per bottle. Usually 2-3 coats of color are needed where only one coat of clear finish is needed (so buy half as much of it).

A little goes a long way! These estimates can vary based upon quality and condition of material.

2 oz. covers ~ 15 – 20 square feet
4 oz. covers ~ 30 – 40 square feet
8 oz. covers ~ 60 – 80 square feet
16 oz. covers ~ 120 – 160 square feet

I purchased this Rub & Restore to dye an existing leather coffee table to match my new sofa set. The entire process took less than 30 minutes to complete. It dried to the touch in less than 30 minutes and cured within a day or two. Cece (mom) was really nice and helpful—She put my order on hold in order to send me some color swatches. Turns out, I would have received a color that was too light to match my sofa. So thanks a bunch to Cece for taking the time to help.

I found a Leather Couch out to the curb in the wee hours on black Friday morning in 2013. My husband thought I was crazy for bringing it home because it was in need of some repairs and a good scrubbing. We have young kiddos and leather was ideal with clean up moving forward so I lugged the bad girl home. However a rusty red leather couch was not my color of choice. We have managed to live with big red for years because of it's perfect size + super comfy-ness. (And also lets face it, A FREE LEATHER COUCH!) Some how this year I stumbled across this product and I was blown away by the reviews and photos. Long story short, this once rejected...More

This is my second time ordering this product. I ordered peppercorn and used it on a chair I picked up at Goodwill. The chair was red leatherette in great shape and I changed color to peppercorn and it looks fantastic! My sister took my advice and did an entire couch, chair and ottoman. It wears great and take so little time. A true money saver!

I love this stuff! I am so baffled that I can change my faux leather couches from a dark red to a medium gray and they look beautiful! Seriously, you can't tell that they were never a different color. Mine took 3 coats to look amazing. People are shocked when I tell them I dyed my couches. The texture is just the same as before I applied the product. I love this stuff!

Headboard from tan to peppercorn. Only needed a little bit. 2 coats of Rub & Restore 1 hour time, kitchen dish sponge and a water spray bottle to keep sponge a little bit moist and bam it was easy. The studs on bed I just rub with old white tee shirt. Thanks Rub & Restore. I told my friends and family, and they will be ordering soon. So will I, thanks LOL!

Wow!!!! You didn't lie! The product arrived yesterday. I was sick to my stomach when I started because I couldn't help but wonder if I was making a huge mistake. It took me about 4 hours non stop. It looks awesome and was so easy. I am beyond thrilled!
