Has your faux leather worn down to an absorbent microfiber like these photos?*

Microfiber is not the same as real suede. A woven or grid texture definitely indicates a synthetic.

Sorry! Suede and nubuck are unfinished leathers. Our products will significantly change the feel and therefore are not recommended.

Our products are not designed for fabric. Our colored finishes will correct discoloration but may stiffen the material. Some folks have used a clear wax to create a leather-like surface. Learn more here.

Tug the material from opposite corners. Does it have elasticity?

Yes it stretches and returns to its original shape.

No, it doesn't stretch very much.

I’m not sure.

Genuine leather has a little elasticity, meaning that it can expand slowly and then contract again. Synthetics, however, are made with a woven or knit backing that will stretch more than leather. If it is stretchy, then it is likely a synthetic.

It melts and smells like plastic.

It chars and smells like burned hair.

Vinyl and other man-made fabrics will melt and smell "plasticy". Leather will char more than melt. It smells like hair or burning organic matter. Bonded leather is made from ground leather on a backing material, it can smell both synthetic and real.

However, changing from a dark or red color to pale shade requires double or triple the volume of color and is significantly more work and maintenance. Mitigate this by choosing the darkest possible shade.
