Custom Color Service

$120

Send a sample, and email photos to customize a matching color for your vinyl or leather.

This fee is for labor (see the process and timeline below). The color is a separate cost: 8 oz. is the order minimum for $49; the 16 oz. size is a better value at $79. Your formula and a master swatch will be kept on file should you ever re-order.

Formulation and re-order fees are non-refundable. We do not accept returns on Custom Colors.

Find a Sample

The bigger the better. Color matches will not be guaranteed on samples smaller than 2″ x 3″ size. Samples can be:

  • Original leather or vinyl (found underneath cushions, or pull some staples and trim from the frame);
  • Cushion case (please indicate which area you want matched with a piece of blue painters tape);
  • Headrest, fuse panel cover, or component from a vehicle;
  • Paint chip from a hardware store (beware, the paint chip may not actually match the material).

Swatches taken from the frame or under cushions may not match the rest of the piece, which means a Custom Color may not either, and you will have to do more blending or refinish the entire piece. In this instance, you may prefer using one of our standard colors.

  2. Email photos to info@rubnrestore.com to help us assess your project.
  3. Add orders@rubnrestore.com and info@rubnrestore.com to your contacts so we don’t land in spam.

The Process & Timeline

Upon receipt of your sample, we email you with either an invoice or request for more information. Once paid, we begin formulation. This is usually completed in just 1-2 business days. However, if we have a lot of Custom Colors in the queue, it may take up to a week. When it ships, you’ll receive a tracking number along with any specific recommendations for use.

We begin by mixing a small amount of color and test it directly on your sample. We examine it in direct sunlight and indoors. We adjust the color accordingly and re-examine until we are satisfied with the formula. This is a painstaking process done with a professional eye. No computer can read the color on a textured surface nor write a formula as accurately, and certainly not without human refinement. This is especially true with base-and-print or marbled aniline leathers.

We then expand the formula to the desired volume. This final color is tested once more on your sample and adjusted if necessary. We stain a piece of scrap leather or vinyl. Half is returned to you with your order (and any components you may have sent); the other is retained on file in the event of a re-order.

Please note, pigments drift. Despite having a formula and swatch on file, if you re-order, we go through the whole song-and-dance again, and so a re-mix fee is charged.

    This is a friendly follow-up to your GREAT product!  I applied the custom tint dye in several light coats and then a few coats with the clear as you instructed.  The results were fantastic.

    Time will tell on how durable the new colors will hold, but I am really pleased with the outcome on our two 10 yr. old La-Z-Boy leather recliners. Before and after pictures attached.

    FYI, we have to other leather recliners (different color) an will probably be ordering a matching dye bottle for them.

    We got this couch for $100. Sent a sample of the area rug for an example of a blue-grey color. The red leather covered in two coats. The vinyl back and sides took three or four in some places.

    Sofa looks absolutely gorgeous.  Sea Foam green needs to make it from being a custom to a Standard color.   LOL Basically, what I did was use the Forest Green as the foundation as you instructed.   I then used the custom Sea Foam Green in a circular motion with the sponge.   Then as a final step I mixed the Foam Green with the Forest Green to give it a faded jean type of look. In the end the sofa looks Green sometimes, Robins Blue other times, and a mix of both depending on the time of the day.    Bottom line it looks like an expensive leather sofa. I just wanted to send along a photo of my 1958 Edsel Pacer interior panel.   It is showing the before and after of the results of your product Rub n' Restore.   The glue that was used on these cars 60 years ago had a tendency to cause severe staining to the light colored vinyl.   Your excellent color matching to the original color and product of Rub n' Restore has brought back the original color to perfection.   Because the stitching is dark green, I decided to use a fine artist pin stripe liner brush to color in the green threads as needed to finish.   I used the product sparingly and after three coats of the Rub n' Restore you can see the b...More

    I have attached before and after pictures of my Suburban car seat restoration. I think it turned out great! I used your custom dye (1997 Chevy Suburban C 1500 Taupe) and finished with a 1:1 mixture of dye and Clear Prep and Finish Conditioner for a satin finish. The leather filler compound did a good job of filling large defects and cracks. I am very pleased with the result.

    Thank you so much for your help I am excited and very happy with the results of your dye. I could not believe how great of a match you guys came up with for my Kiwi color couch. The dye went on easy, simple and the couch looks as good as new. Attached is a picture, I am still in awe of how beautiful it turned out. Really want to thank you very much for your help, product and advice.

    Just wanted you to know how well the Rub 'n Restore process went. I received your custom mixed color which was spot-on perfect for our old leather captains chairs. My Stingray boat seats were solid white before. I am getting so many compliments and everybody is wanting to know what I used. So I keep telling everybody about rub and restore. Thank you very much! I do have the clear and I have been using that in between coats and as a final coat.

    I looked everywhere I could think of for a way to change the color of my saddlebags to match a custom seat that was a spectacular gift to me. The bags were black, black and more black. The only bags I could find in other colors would cost upward of $1300 and no guarantee of a match. I found your product via a youtube video and purchased a custom mix. I was able to match the custom seat with both the bags and a windshield bag in no time at all. Since then I have been stopped several times with comments on how good they look and where did I ever find bags of this color. Thank you so much for a quality product that let me do what I wanted to do ...More
